Hurdwar Pilgrims and Cholera, More Especially with Regard to the Epidemic in 1885

Hurdwau has obtained a certain amount of unenviable notoriety on account of the outbreaks of cholera, which are supposed to have originated there during great fairs, and been thence spread far and wide by the pilgrims on the return journey to their homes. On this account the following notes on Hurdwar cholera may be of interest. Before narrating the particulars of the outbreak of this year, I will refer to the prevalence of cholera in Hurdwar and in the Saharanpur district for the past 15 years, the relations of cholera epidemic to the Fairs, and the conditions of life at Hurdwar during these melas or religious gatherings. The annexed table shows the number of cholera cases reported to have occurred in the Saharanpur district from the year 1870 up till the end of 1884 :?
